Chair: Melanie McKee

Today, Date: May 1, 2024

Meeting Date: April 15, 2024

Project Name: Cuautla

Meeting was on April 15, 2024, via zoom with Ignacio Romero.

The meeting was approximately 30 minutes.

Melanie McKee will take on Cuautla as the chair.

The goal of the meeting:

Background:

The International Relations Council (IRC) of Riverside, a non-profit organization operating under 501(c)(3) status, is actively engaged in fostering partnerships between the United States and foreign cities. The IRC comprises nine Sister City committees, each representing one of Riverside’s nine Sister Cities, and has a longstanding commitment to nurturing collaborative relationships between the USA and international communities.

Cuautla, a relatively small city located in the Mexican state of Morelos, with a population of 145,000, became Riverside’s second Sister City on July 9, 1968. Known for its natural warm sulfur springs and mild climate, Cuautla is a notable tourist destination. Additionally, as an official historic city integral to Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain, Cuautla holds significant cultural and historical importance.

The relationship between Riverside and Cuautla goes beyond cultural exchanges and includes practical collaborations, such as training programs for firefighting personnel. The Riverside Fire Department regularly conducts training sessions in Cuautla and provides support by donating decommissioned vehicles.

In a gesture that further solidifies the bond between the two cities, Cuautla has approved the renaming of a street in downtown Cuautla after Riverside City. This act symbolizes the commitment to strengthening the sister-city relationship and fostering continued collaboration and goodwill between the communities.

Purpose: The IRC-Cuautla Sister City proposes renaming a street in Riverside City as a gesture of goodwill, aimed at strengthening the bond between our communities based on mutual respect and reciprocity.

Melanie McKee will be meeting with Phillip Falcone (Ward-1) regarding a street in Riverside.
