Jalani Bakari (Darryl Martin) Bio

Jalani Bakari (Darryl Martin) has lived and worked in Riverside for over 30 years, always balancing work, family, and civic duties. Jalani is a small business owner working with middle and high school students and a Grant Facilitator for Moreno Valley College, preparing youth for college access and career readiness. He serves as the chair and executive director of Garrett, Livingston, and Graham (GLG) Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit aiding in the science and education of youth. Jalani has participated in African and American history challenges for Laptop computers for over thirty years.
Presently, Jalani sits on the board of the City of Riverside International Relations Council (IRC). He was past president of the IRC from 2012 to 2014, during which time he implemented a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant of $115,000 for Sister City activities. Jalani helped raise over 70 K, allowing John W. North High School students to travel to Asia, including Hong Kong, Beijing, and Riverside’s sister city, Jiangmen, China. He is the Chair of Riverside/ Ghana Sister City, Obuasi.
Jalani Bakari and his wife, Dr. Angela Martin, have lived in Riverside since 1996 with three adult children. Jalani has lectured worldwide to college students on student life, student services, and student development.
